Norway: Tooji comes out and releases 'Father'

Tooji, Norway's 2012 representative, has been fighting against discrimination and racism all his life - however the Norwegian-Iranian singer has today come out in the most extraordinary way. His new song - Father - challenges religion and it speaks volumes.
The song and the video is about running from himself, denying himself, and yes, if God is in everyone and everything, denying God. With the project I want to express that love between two of the same sex has been tainted by religion for too long. And that religion has imposed too many people unnecessary shame and anguish throughout the years.
I can't lie, I'm not a lover of the song itself but the message here is very important. Very important indeed. Good job, Tooji :-) #LoveIsLove!

#ESC2015: REVIEW OF THE SEMI FINALS!

Twenty countries have managed to qualify through the semi finals for tomorrow nights big grand final. I have loved both shows even if I'm not 100% happy with the results.. We're always going to have some great songs that won't make it.. Find out what this blogger thought about the shows and the week so far below:

SEMI FINAL ONE
The first semi final was amazing! Albania made it, Russia made it.. Georgia made it! So did Estonia, Greece, Belgium... all amazing songs. I think Russia won this semi final and I think 10th place would've been either Hungary or Serbia. I'm a little shocked Hungary made it through but pleased. Boggie's performance brought a tear to my eye. Very touching. Armenia's entry could've been a disaster live but Genealogy impressed me. Moving away from the songs, the hosts are pretty good although not very memorable.. Does this make sense? I love Conchita hosting the green room! She's a natural :) and I also love it when the participants walk from the green room onto the stage during the opening.. That's a lovely touch. Talking of Conchita, this photo is beautiful! Love it!

Overall I was impressed with the results. My biggest disappointment was The Netherlands not qualifying though... Why ay ay ay didn't they make it? I'm also sad that we won't see Macedonia in the final. Daniel performed brilliantly and I now fear we may not see a Macedonian entry in next years contest... wasn't they close to withdrawing last year? Finland not making it was a shock. It wasn't my favourtie song - far from it - but I thought PKN deserved it.. Moldova, Denmark and Belarus deserved what they got. I got 7/10 right. I thought Denmark, Finland and The Netherlands wouldn't make it. Unfortunately I have read some comments saying Elhaida was vocally poor. I don't agree. She smashed it. I want Albania to be top ten but whether she will or not remains to be seen....

SEMI FINAL TWO
Now I was rather upset with some results from last nights semi. Czech Republic, Ireland and Malta all deserved to qualify! I am really sorry to see them miss out. Ireland's Molly is a true star. She's only 16 but her performance last night was one of the best. Also Amber really impressed me. And as for the Czech Republic.. Marta & Václav didn't just deserve the final, but they deserved top ten. Obviously the rest of Europe (and Australia) didn't agree with me. I'd be saddened but not shocked if they quit Eurovision. Even though I didn't think Portugal would make the final, I'm still upset Leonor failed to qualify. I'm not saying that I dislike the Cypriot song but I don't think they deserved to have qualified over some that missed out... but that's they way it goes. John was flawless vocally. I was underwhelmed with Iceland so it was no surprise to see Maria fail although I was a bit surprised about Switzerland's non qualification. San Marino's failure didn't surprise me. I got 9/10. I thought Iceland would make it and Latvia wouldn't. For once I am happy to be wrong!

With regards to the qualifiers, I'm thrilled Latvia and Israel finally qualified after all these years! Sweden, Azerbaijan and Norway are possible winners so it was no surprise to see them make it. I was a bit confused with the Azeri dancers are first but they did make the performance memorable. I hope Elnur won't flop like Dilara. Lithuania's performance featured three kisses, including a lesbian and gay kiss. Are Vaidas and Monika a couple? Knez qualified and I think Montenegro could achieve top ten tomorrow night. I think Sweden won this semi.

DRAMA!
Even though nothing is official, it seems the EBU are going to allow Australia to participate next year too and the year after.. I don't mind but this will do doubt get some people raging IF it turns out to be true. China have sent a delegation to Vienna and they're broadcasting it too - maybe we'll see them debut one year? A Moroccan delegation are also in Vienna it seems. Is this the end of EUROvision? Personally, I'd love to see as many countries as possible compete. One could argue Israel, Azerbaijan and Cyprus aren't European countries yet they're allowed to compete..

Elsewhere Michele from San Marino threw some shade in Måns's direction although did later say he was joking. Hmmm..

Apparently fake cheers will be used tomorrow after Russia's performance. I am not in Vienna so I don't know if it's true or not although I'm upset if it is. As much as I hate to see booing in Eurovision, the crowd still have a right to express how they feel. It's freedom of speech. I was so sad to see Dima booed in London although if that's how the masses feel. fine. Even though I don't agree with booing an act - I do agree with freedom of speech. If Polina wins - and it's very possible - expect some more controversy! Stay tuned for a special preview of the grand final!

REVIEWING THE CLASS OF 2015: NORWAY!

Norway opted for Mørland & Debrah Scarlett to represent them in Vienna. They narrowly beat Erlend Bratland in the national final - did Norway make the right choice? Is Oslo 2016 a possibility? Here's our thoughts...

Ana: I liked this song since I first listened to it. They are sweet and dark at the same time and even though they are so different, I love how their voices sound when they sing together. It’s a strange combination but it really works. This deserves, at least, be in the top 10. 9/10

Ilkar: Another very atmospheric song this year. Beautiful melody and arrangement, interesting voices and lyrics. The question is if they can create the intensivity and the atmosphere of the video also on stage. In the Norwegian final they weren't quite there but if they do better in Vienna this will do very well indeed. 8.5/10

Jack: Norway are contenders this year, y'all! Mørland & Debrah Scarlett's song is absolutely beautiful and I would be more than happy seeing Norway victorious. Their performance during MGP could have been better - Debrah was clearly nervous so I hope that won't effect her in Vienna. Even though A Monster Like Me is an awesome entry, there's still a part of me that yearns for a well-done pizza ;-) 9/10

Jess: What a brilliant song this is, and I just love how well Mørland & Debrah voices work together! 8/10

John: Mixed feelings here. It's a good song, sung well and makes quite a dramatic impact - but is it Eurovision? Sounds like it would sit well in a "Phanton of the Opera - The Sequel" type of musical. Doesn't tick any of the boxes that a typical ESC winner ought to tick - The Monster Like Me doesn't roll off the tongue quite as easily as "La,La,La" or "Boom-Bang-A-Bang" and the melody is not one you're likely to find yourself singing in the shower! But what do I know? 5/10

OUR VERDICT - 39.5/50
OVERALL SCORE - 7.9/10

MØRLAND & DEBRAH SCARLETT TO REPRESENT NORWAY!

...and Norway opts for Mørland & Debrah Scarlett. Another brilliant choice from the Scandinavians tonight! And so that concludes the national final season. Of course we have some songs yet to be revealed - but this is the last actual show of the 2015 season. I must catch up with the full performances as I was watching Mello tonight :-)

Vienna 2015: Super Weekend #8!

It's the last weekend of the 2015 national final season. Sad times! Sweden and Norway will select their entries tonight; and tomorrow the entries from Azerbaijan, Russia and Albania will be presented. San Marino and Australia will follow on Monday....

SWEDEN
It's the night everyone's been waiting for. The grand final of Melodifestivalen 2015! Twelve acts will be figting for the ticket to Vienna but I think it's going to be a three horse race between Måns Zelmerlöw, Eric Saade and Jon Henrik Fjällgren. Maybe. Here's an in depth review of the songs.

  1. Samir & Viktor – Groupie
  2. JTR – Building It Up
  3. Dinah Nah – Make Me (La La La)
  4. Jon-Henrik Fjällgren – Jag Är Fri (Manne Leam Frijje)
  5. Jessica Andersson – Can’t Hurt Me Now
  6. Måns Zelmerlöw – Heroes
  7. Linus Svenning – Forever Starts Today
  8. Isa – Don’t Stop
  9. Magnus Carlsson – Möt Mig I Gamla Stan
  10. Eric Saade – Sting
  11. Mariette – Don’t Stop Believing
  12. Hasse Andersson – Guld Och Gröna Skogar

NORWAY
Let's not forget Norway. MGP will be a one night affair this year, as the semi finals have been scrapped. I think Mørland & Debrah Scarlett will win. Their ballad is very strong and proving to be the favourite with the bookies. My first choice would be Alexandra Joner though. Her song is great fun. I also like Erlend Bratland and Staysman & Lazz. Is a well-done pizza on the menu for Norway tonight?

....AND ON SUNDAY?
Reports say Elnur Hüseynov will represent The Land of Fire - but nothing is official yet. We'll know Azerbaijan's representative and song tomorrow.. I expect great things from them! Elsewhere, Elhaida Dani's I'm Alive will be presented. And if that wasn't enough, the Russian entry is also going to be revealed..

Belarus: Alexander Rybak composes song for newly formed girlband!

Alexander Rybak wants to return to Eurovision but not as a singer, he wants to compose Belarus's entry for Vienna. He's already held auditions in Belarus to select five talented girls to perform his song. The girls have been chosen and preparations are underway for the national final - scheduled for late January. The girlband don't have a name yet but consist of  Anna Ray, Tanya Stahovskaya, Victoria Nazarko and Taisiya Serikova. Rybak said the song “will show Belarusian soul” and feature the national language. The Norwegian 2009 representative also has a song in the Maltese selection,  Still Here sung by local talent Franklin. Time will tell if he's successful there but I don't think that song is good enough. Meanwhile, other names interested in representing Belarus include Alyona Lanskaya (2013), Napoli and Gunesh.

Norway: National final on 14th March, orchestra returns!

Norway's entry for Eurovision 2015 will be selected on 14th March in Oslo Spektrum Arena. Melodi Grand Prix and Melodifestivalen will therefore both be held the same day. NRK, the Norwegian national broadcaster, will bring back the long-awaited orchestra to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Eurovision. The general director said:
At NRK we are so lucky to have our own orchestra. We wish to use it in programs that have a wide appeal. We want to produce events that stand out so this is a nice way to make Melodi Grand Prix even bigger.
There won't be any semi finals - and tickets should go on sale towards the end of the year. I'm looking forward to see what Norway has to offer next year.

Missed Opportunities 2014: Norway!

Melodi Grand Prix was one of the strongest selections this year. The final took place on 15th March with eight participants, but it was always going to be a two horse race between Carl Espen and Linnea Dale.

Linnea Dale - High Hopes
Linnea managed to achieve a very respectable 2nd place. High Hopes was a favourite with many. Carl was probably the deserving winner though but this blogger prefers Linnea's song. Did you prefer Carl or Linnea? Or do you think someone else deserved to win? I'd defiantly love to see her try again next year! The acoustic version of High Hopes is simply stunning..... #wow!

Introducing 2014: Norway!

The grand finale of Melodi Grand Prix 2014 was held on 15th March. It featured a number of great songs... My two favourites were Silent Storm by Carl Espen and High Hopes by Linnea Dale. I would have been delighted with either of them winning. It was Carl who eventually won - and the lovely Linnea came a very respectful 2nd. Carl Espen (aged 31) used to be a carpenter and has done a lot of volunteer work for cancer research. His performance in the Norwegian selection was very good, and hopefully he's improved even more for Copenhagen!

Norway are among the favourites to win the contest. Oslo 2015? The juries will probably adore this song, it's just a case of whether the average TV viewer will... Carl will rehearse today for the first time.

NuVidz: Tijana Dapcevic, Chachi ft. Natascha Bessez, Tinkara Kovač, Adelén!

The Macedonian video-clip was revealed this afternoon and it's awesome. The video-clip of To The Sky features several shirtless men... I really like Tijana and I think it's one of the best Macedonian entries ever! The lovely Natascha Bessez has recently teamed up with American DJ Chachi - and here's the official video-clip of Heart is a Warrior. I love this song <3 Natascha is fabulous and she deserves massive success. And... she should have represented Denmark! Yesterday, Tinkara Kovač released the official video-clip of Round and Round. There have also been slight changes to the song, which makes it even stronger. Finally, we have a new song from the gorgeous Adelén. Enjoy Always On My Mind!

NuVidz: Mo, Jessica Mauboy, Shakira, Hind!

Mo came third in Melodi Grand Prix with Heal. He was one of the favourites to represent Norway - and it is a very nice song. Although I think Norway made the right choice! The lovely Jessica Mauboy will perform as the interval act in the 2nd semi-final, in Copenhagen. Her latest single is Never Be the Same. She could easily chart in the United Kingdom or America with this song. She's amazing!! I've am a massive fan of Shakira. Her new song is entitled Empire! This is an amazing song. It's clocked almost 19 million views on YouTube in one month. She also performed this song on The Voice UK. Remember Hind? She represent The Netherlands in 2008 although didn't manage to qualify. Well here's one of her latest songs - Make It Count. She recently gave an exclusive interview to my friend at Life After Helsinki 2007. :-)

Norway: Carl Espen wins "Melodi Grand Prix"!

What a fantastic result! Carl Espen will fly the Norwegian flag - one of the best songs this year without a doubt. Many fans are saying Norway could win the whole thing in Copenhagen... I defiantly think he has a shot. Oslo 2015?

When I heard "Silent Storm" for the first time, I knew there was something rather special about it. Linnea Dale came 2nd, her song was very pleasant. Meanwhile, Mo and Knut also made the super-final. The results:
  1. Carl Epsen – Silent Storm / 53,712
  2. Linnea Dale – High Hopes / 39,086
  3. Mo – Heal / 37,405
  4. Knut Kippersund Nesdal – Taste Of You / 27,757
It's worth remembering that Portugal will chose their entry at some point tonight. And wasn't Azerbaijan going to reveal their song? But for now, let's enjoy Silent Storm!

Norway: Representative to be selected tonight!

The grand final of "Melodi Grand Prix" will be held this evening. Norway always have great national selections and this year is no exception. I'm really looking forward to watching this tonight But who's going to be crowned the winner? My preference would be Carl Espen. His haunting ballad is without a doubt the big favourite to take the trophy tonight... My 2nd favourite is Linnea Dale. I have high hopes for her, too!

I predict Elisabeth Carew and Mo will make the super-final, but the winner should defiantly be between Carl Espen and Linnea Dale. The show will start at 19:55 CET and can be watched here. I'll defiantly be tuning in. This is tonight's running order - and doesn't Carl have a great draw?
  1. El Cuero – Ain’t no Love (in This City No More)
  2. Elisabeth Carew – Sole Survivor
  3. Knut Kippersund Nesdal – Taste of You
  4. Dina Misund – Needs
  5. Mo – Heal
  6. Linnea Dale – High Hopes
  7. Charlie – Hit Me Up
  8. Carl Espen – Silent Storm
  9. Oda & Wulff – Sing

NuVidz: Linnea Dale, Arisa, Rui Andrade, Mariya Yaremchuk!

My favourite act in this years Norwegian national final is Linnea Dale. She's talented and beautiful. Here's the official video-clip of High Hopes. Although I don't think Norway will opt for this. They'll probably go for either Mo or Carl Epsen. Arisa won Sanremo with Controvento - and if Emma wasn't chosen internally, this song would have probably been the Italian entry for Copenhagen. It's such a brilliant song. Arisa has said in an interview that should would love to represent her country in Eurovision. Let's hope RAI take note for 2015! Meanwhile, Rui Andrade is the big favourite to win the Festival da Canção on Saturday with Ao teu encontro. A pleasant ballad but I do think it's a little boring... his voice is phenomenal and I just think the song lets him down. But that's just my opinion. I've heard that Mariya Yaremchuk was considering changing her song for Copenhagen although I don't know if that's true. With the current political situation in Ukraine, anything could happen. But a ballad in Russian, ironically, could fly the Ukrainian flag. Enjoy БЕЗ ТЕБЯ! We'll have all the entries for Eurovision 2014 by this time next week so we don't have long to wait. :)

Norway: Mo survived 2011 Utøya massacre!

Mohamed Farah Abdi is one of the fifteen acts who hopes to represent Norway in Copenhagen. The Guardian has reported his personal struggles following the Utøya massacre in July 2011 where 69 people were killed. He managed to survive this terrifying ordeal although sadly lost his best friend.

Mo was a finalist on Norwegian X Factor in 2010 and was at the point of a massive breakthrough although after witnessing the terrifying attack on Utøya island, he has been struggling with post-traumatic stress and has disappeared completely from the public eye. He has now decided to enter Melodi Grand Prix - the Norwegian selection, with a song that has a strong personal meaning. The song he's competing with is entitled "Heal" and is a electro-pop ballad. He said:
"The song's about taking your time to heal. My goal is to inspire people and touch their hearts, that they should never, ever give up."
It's a heartwarming story. The singer also said:
"It's important to keep your good friends and family around you, and that's what I did. I kept myself around people who really love me. That's the main thing that really got me through these years, and of course all of my supporters who really encouraged me to come back. They were just waiting, and that's really special."
The song will be released on 19th February!

NuVidz: Aram MP3, Greta Salóme, Tooji, Farid Mammadov!

Aram MP3 was announced as the Armenian representative on New Year's Eve and the day after he released Just go on. Nice song and it's defiantly a brave choice from Armenia... his ESC track will be revealed next month - I'm very excited about Armenia's song actually. I think it'll be great. Greta Salóme, Iceland's 2012 representative, has re-worked a well known Norwegian hymn. It's entitled Vetrarsálmur. What do you think? Rebels is very different from Tooji's normal style but I really love it. Why have I only just discovered it? Anyway, I always thought he was really underrated in Baku and "Stay" was amoung my favourites that year. Azerbaijan are always successful in Eurovision - and 2013 was no exception as they came 2nd with Farid Mammadov. Well he's back with a new single! Farid has released Her an yanimda, which is kinda boring but the Azeri language is so beautiful! I really wish Azerbaijan would sing in their native language one year.
